Alvarez Arrieta & Diaz-Silveira Continue Firm Growth with Addition of New Attorneys

Miami, Fla. (PRWEB) June 10, 2013

Alvarez Arrieta & Diaz-Silveira, LLP, a leading South Florida boutique corporate-transactional law firm, continues to expand with the addition of a Private Client practice, which includes estate and wealth preservation planning, led by Partner Blas Cueto. In addition, Erik Christensen has joined the firm as an associate and will provide corporate transactional legal services.

Prior to joining Alvarez Arrieta & Diaz-Silveira, Blas practiced with a prominent boutique estate-planning firm located in Miami, where he assisted both domestic and international clients in implementing their estate planning and taxation strategies. Blas advises clients and their families on a host of issues, specializing in estate planning, business succession planning, wealth preservation, estate and trust administration, and the implementation of meaningful charitable-giving plans; including the establishment of not-for-profit entities, foundations and charitable trusts.

Thoughtful estate planning is so much more than the distribution of assets, said Blas Cueto. It is the opportunity to define a legacy and establish a path forward for businesses, employees, families and charitable organizations. I believe my area of expertise is a perfect complement to the great work being done at Alvarez Arrieta & Diaz-Silveira, and I look forward to better serving our clients through expanded legal services.

Blas earned his LL.M. in Estate Planning from the University of Miami School of Law in 2004. In 2003, he received his J.D. from the University of Florida, and was admitted to the Florida Bar the same year. During law school, Blas served as executive managing editor of the Florida Journal of International Law, and was an active member of the Spanish-American Law Students Association and the Law School Ambassadors Program. He graduated from the University of Miami in 2000 with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance.

In addition to the Florida Bar, Blas is a member of the Dade County Bar Association and the Cuban-American Bar Association. He serves as class delegate for the Belen Jesuit Alumni Association and is a part of the Belen Jesuit Alumni Association Lawyers Section. Blas is also the past president of Business Networking International and was honored for his leadership winning the Most Valuable Member Award for the chapter in 2012. He was also recently recognized as a Florida Super Lawyers Rising Star.

As we grow our practice, we look for top-caliber attorneys who possess the same commitment to personalized and cost-effective counsel, stated Alejandro Arrieta. We are thrilled to have Blas and Erik join our team and offer expanded legal services to our clients.

Erik Christensen has a wide range of experience that includes legal work on international and domestic transactions, mergers and acquisitions, debt and equity offerings, securities and bank regulatory filings, private equity and joint venture investments as well as corporate finance and project finance matters.

Prior to joining Alvarez Arrieta & Diaz-Silveira, Erik was an associate at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP in New York, where he supported the Financial Institutions and Corporate Finance practices. Prior to law school, Erik negotiated broadcast media agreements for the National Basketball Association.

Erik is a member of the New York State Bar Association and New York City Bar Association, and has been actively involved in voter protection initiatives in South Floridas Miami-Dade and Lee Counties. He is also a past director of Community Legal Services of East Palo Alto.

Erik graduated from Dartmouth College in 2002, magna cum laude, with a B.A. in Russian Language. He received his J.D. in 2008 from Stanford Law School where he was the co-editor in chief of the Stanford Journal of International Law and a U.S. Department of Education Foreign Language and Area Studies fellow. Erik is fluent in English and Russian, and is admitted to the practice of law in the State of Florida and the State of New York.

California Author Returns Home for Much Anticipated Book Tour

San Francisco, California (PRWEB) June 06, 2013

American-born novelist, poet, and performer Lee Foust returns to the West Coast this summer to undertake a tour of readings and performances to promote his new book, Sojourner, a collection of stories and poems centered upon the theme of place. Foust, who grew up in the East Bay hamlet of Walnut Creek, earned a degree in Creative Writing at Cal State San Francisco and worked in local bookstores before leaving California, first to study abroad in Florence, Italy, and then to earn a Ph.D. at New York University. He has now lived and taught both Literature and Creative Writing courses in Florence for some sixteen years at various American institutions, including both the Cal State program and New York Universitys Villa La Pietra.

Fousts recent book, Sojourner, a collection of short stories, verse, prose poems, and flash fictions, engages the mystery of our experience of place. The texts confront both our sense of belonging, as well as our frequent desire to escape into unknown territories; familiar and foreign cities, people, and languages through imagination, travel and long-term residence. The nomadic tales and poems in Sojourner chart the topography of San Francisco and New York City as well as exploring such unlikely spots as Lubbock, TX, Poznan, Poland, Helsinki, Florence, and Assisi In these journeys Fousts characters find and abandon love, themselves, and each other in homes, flats, tenements, and squatseven on park benches.

Fellow aural poet and blogger on the topic, Michael Myshack (AKA Swampmessiah), claims in Poetry and Other Sounds that the texts in Sojourner are as much for the ear as for the mind. And Lee himself is excited to return home, new book in hand, to wow old friends, family, and former students with his dynamic performance style. He performs a cappella, beating on a drum, or with recorded backdrops of his own creation. He has honed his style over the years since he last graced San Francisco stages with his band Nominal State (anthologized last year in Dark Entries records’ Bay Area Retrograde LP) on the New York spoken word scene as well as in his new Italian home where he has performed with the Chille della Balanza theatre company, and read in nightclubs and at various universities in both Florence and Rome.

The West Coast tour kicks off at Green Apple Books in San Francisco on June 11th. It seemed like the perfect place to begin, says Foust, not only is it one of San Franciscos best bookstores, but Im pretty familiar with the place since I once worked there. Photographer, Debra A. Zeller, who took the photos and designed the cover of Sojourner, also worked there. Thats where we met, actually, says Foust. The shop is even mentioned in the book, but its really Debras storyshe was working in the office upstairs during the earthquake in 89 and was practically buried alive under the books when the walls started shaking. What a way to go!

Foust will also headline Frank Andricks WTF reading series at Lunas Caf

Photonics Leaders Gather for Launch of Fraunhofer UK Research

London, UK (PRWEB) May 27, 2013

Leaders from throughout the photonics community including SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, were on hand 23 May at the Royal Academy of Engineering for the launch of Fraunhofer UK Research by UK Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, and Skills and MP for Twickenham Vince Cable. The first Fraunhofer Centre in the UK, the Centre for Applied Photonics (CAP), is hosted by Strathclyde University in Glasgow.

Establishment of Fraunhofer UK is intended to pave the way for a major acceleration in high-tech innovation through partnerships with universities and industry to develop and commercialize the country’s top research.

“The UK produces some of the most pioneering scientific research in the world but we need to ensure our best ideas are developed to a stage where they can be easily adopted by business, generating the commercial success that fuels growth,” Business Secretary Cable said at the launch event.” Fraunhofer has a proven track record in bringing new ideas and technologies to market across the world.”

“Sitting at the interface between universities and industry, Fraunhofer will help the UK create a powerful innovation system from blue-skies research to applied research and development and from prototyping and small-scale production to full-scale manufacturing,” said Tim Holt, Executive Director of Fraunhofer UK.

Fraunhofer, with more than 20,000 employees in 66 Fraunhofer institutes in Germany and many more in its nearly two dozen other facilities in other countries including the U.S.A., Portugal, and Italy, has earned wide praise for its technology transfer model.

“In a world keenly in need of the many benefits that photonics technology transfer has to offer — including economic vitality and solving the challenges of this changing world — the Fraunhofer institutes lead the way,” said SPIE CEO Eugene Arthurs. “They were early developers of successful tech transfer processes and have established practices that have resulted in the creation and commercialization of numerous important inventions. The Fraunhofer approach of bringing research and development under the same roofs, with student and faculty pursuing both pure and applied research, and engineers, technologists, and marketing teams providing input about applications ideas along with development, is a well-proven strategy. The involvement of industry is a crucial element of this success.”

The first Fraunhofer UK facility celebrated its opening in April, when the CAP presented an inaugural symposium and tours of its labs. The centre was established with funding from Germany-based Fraunhofer, the University of Strathclyde, the Scottish government, Scottish Enterprise, and the Scottish Funding Council.

Martin Dawson, a professor at the Strathclyde Institute of Photonics who has been appointed Head of the Glasgow facility, listed research and development projects to be undertaken by the CAP including:

Renowned Activist and Filmmaker Godfrey Reggio to Deliver Commencement Address at Santa Fe University of Art and Design

Santa Fe, NM (PRWEB) May 06, 2013

Santa Fe University of Art and Design (SFUAD) announced today that activist and filmmaker Godfrey Reggio will deliver the commencement address and receive an honorary degree at the universitys 2013 graduation ceremony, which will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, in the Greer Garson Theatre on campus. The ceremony will also feature student singer Malcolm Morgan (13, BFA in Theatre), student speaker Sandra Halpin (13, BFA in Studio Arts), and music by the Acoustic Americana, Celtic, and African Drum Ensembles, among other performances. Forty-nine students are eligible to walk in the commencement ceremony this year.

We look forward to staying in touch with our graduates as they advance in their careers, and we hope this university will always have a special place in their hearts, said Larry Hinz, president of Santa Fe University of Art and Design. Were excited to bring Godfrey Reggio back to campus for this years graduation ceremony because as a Santa Fean who has enjoyed tremendous success as an international filmmaker, he can give sound advice to our graduates as they explore their new roles in the professional world.

Reggio is the creator of a cinematic style that crafts poetic images of extraordinary emotional impact. He is best known for the Qatsi trilogy, Koyaanisqatsi (1982), Powaqqatsi (1988) and Naqoyqatsi (2002). With soundtracks by composer Philip Glass, these visceral films fuse image and music into wordless narratives that question the world we live in. The Qatsi films have played for global audiences to critical acclaim and have been performed more than 250 times with live orchestra and big-screen projection. They are still screened today.

Considered unclassifiable, the Qatsi films have received wide recognition. The United States Library of Congress deemed Koyaanisqatsi culturally significant and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry. The Harvard Film Archive is the permanent repository for Reggios films.

Born in New Orleans in 1940, Reggio moved to Santa Fe in 1959, where he was educated as a Christian Brother at St. Michaels College (now Santa Fe University of Art and Design). He taught grade school, then high school at St. Michaels High in Santa Fe. In 1963, he founded and directed Young Citizens for Action, a community organizing project that facilitated collaboration between barrio youth gangs in Santa Fe. He also co-founded La Clinica de la Gente, a facility that provided medical care to 12,000 people in Santa Fe, and La Gente, a community organizing project in Northern New Mexicos barrios. In 1972, he co-founded the Institute for Regional Education in Santa Fe, a nonprofit foundation focused on media development and the arts.

In the eighties, Reggio made the first two Qatsi films, which are still influential today. In 1991, he directed Anima Mundi, a 28-minute montage celebrating the magnificence and diversity of the worlds animal species, also with a soundtrack by Glass. In 1995, he directed Evidence, a film about the profound effects of television on children.

Now that I am an Ancient, I can say with delight that my time on campus as a young Brother watermarked my life: the provocation to live beyond necessity; to not seek answers, rather to ask questions; and, to act as if I knew what I was doing, said Reggio. With nostalgia, I return to celebrate commencement by raising questions that were asked 3,000 years ago. My inspiration for this occasion is a statement by Nietzsche, We have art so that we may not perish by the truth.

Reggio is a frequent lecturer on philosophy, technology and film at numerous colleges, universities and conferences throughout the world. He has just completed the new feature film Visitors with composer Philip Glass. Visitors is scheduled for a September 2013 world premiere as a live orchestral cinematic event and will be presented by Steven Soderbergh.

Reggio currently resides in Santa Fe and Red Hook, N.Y.
